Contemporary Rustic Vegetable Bin Makeover

Contemporary Rustic Vegetable Bin Makeover from Denise on a Whim
This vegetable bin is something a friend of mine picked up at a yard sale.
It started out with an outdated country style but
with a few new doors and some paint, it's now a modern-rustic piece!

The bin is a custom makeover for my friend Karlye.
You may remember her name from other projects like
the antique dresser I redid for her or the blue and brown dresser I painted for her.
You might even remember her name from the
barnwood hook board I made or the leaded glass window shelf I created for her.
To sum it up, she's been mentioned on the blog a few times before!

Here's the bin as she bought it.
The apples just weren't her thing.

To get rid of the apples, I had to create new doors for the bin.
I didn't want to try wood fill, as that would have been a lot of filler and,
chances are, I would not have achieved a nice smooth finish.
I know my limitations and wood filler is one of them! :)

I started by painting the outside of the bin in white chalk paint.

The inside of the bin is all painted in turquoise.

To replace the drop-down doors on the front, a 1x10 was the perfect fit.
I simply cut it to the necessary width.

For knobs, I opted for something old instead of something new.
I chose some knobs I had removed from a previous piece of furniture and
left them exactly as I had found them, with a little bit of wear and tear.
They seemed to match the feeling of the bin best that way.

For the top of the bin, I constructed a door from pallet wood,
using the same construction as I would for one of my pallet signs.

All of the boards were stained with Minwax Special Walnut
and used the original hinges to attach them back onto the cabinet.

The cabinet now has a a contemporary farmhouse feel and I adore it!
I usually end up wishing I could keep Karlye's furniture for my own house.
But, she knows where I live and I doubt she'd let me get away with that! ;)
